Welcome to Media

"Today we are beginning to notice that the new media are not just mechanical gimmicks for creating worlds of illusion, but new languages with new and unique powers of expression."

Marshall McLuhan

Why Choose Media Studies?

Today we are surrounded by media wherever we look. There are hundreds of TV channels, streaming services, film, radio, the internet, magazines and papers ....... and most of us can access these almost anywhere and at almost anytime. So not only is studying Media interesting in its own right, it also gives you vital skills to understand the changing world around us.

Key Stage 4:

Year 9 is a preparation year, allowing you to become familiar with techniques, such as using software packages like Photoshop, as well as learning about some of the theoretical frameworks.

In Years 10 and 11 you will be looking at aspects of advertising, the film industry and more specialist areas such as music videos, through the analysis of Close Study Products (CSPs). You will also have the opportunity to create your own media product so that you can demonstrate your practical skills, as well as your grasp of the theory behind them.

We also offer Media Studies at A Level which explores the subject in much greater detail, again through the study of CSPs focussing on cultural and social contexts as well as moral and ethical issues. Continuing to study Media Studies as A Level offers an ideal stepping stone to University or a career in the media industry.

Would it Suit Me?

Media would be an ideal course if you:

  • Enjoy being creative and using your imagination
  • Enjoy using different types of software
  • Are considering a career in radio, television, film or journalism
  • Have strong English skills and are goof at essay writing
