Year 8 Options Evening

Start date:
26th Feb 2019
End date:
26th Feb 2019

YEAR 8 OPTIONS PROCESS GUIDANCE

Year 8 will be beginning their GCSE and equivalent courses next year. The GCSE courses will be quite different from those delivered in recent years, with an increased emphasis on extended written work, very little coursework and a shift from modular exams throughout the course to terminal exams at the end. This will be our sixth year group to begin Key Stage 4 in Year 9, and the extra time available in a three-year programme of study is enabling us to prepare students more effectively for these challenging courses.

One essential part of the transition to Key Stage 4 is the options process. Form Tutors have already started delivering information and guidance lessons to their groups to help them with the decisions that need to be taken shortly. This letter provides vital information on how your child must complete the Options Form, details of the Open Evening, Taster Day and the selection process for this event.

On Tuesday 26 February, the Year 8 Options Evening will be taking place.  This is an essential evening in the decision making process for next year. The evening will consist of a short presentation by senior staff and opportunities for you to meet informally with subject teachers. There are a wide range of courses on offer and the evening will hopefully offer you the necessary information to help guide your child through the process. The presentation will take place in the main school, but due to the large number of students in the year, we have to divide the evening into two sessions. Please attend the session that has been assigned to your child, as this evening is always very well attended and the hall has limited capacity.

The school will be open for parents to speak informally to subject teachers from 5.00pm onwards. We would encourage parents to arrive before the presentation in the Main Hall to speak to subject teachers as the busiest time is 7.15-8pm.

6.15pm presentation in the Main Hall – 8CAL, 8CHL, 8HAL, 8SUL

6.45pm presentation in the Main Hall – 8CAE, 8CHE, 8HAE, 8SUE

The school will close at 8.00pm so all visitors must leave the building no later than 8pm.

On Tuesday 26 March, students will be taking part in the Taster Day. This is an opportunity for students to select four taster sessions that they would like to experience to help them make their final decisions about which subjects to choose. Taster Day selection forms will be given to students on Tuesday 13 February to complete after the Year 8 Options Evening and before 28 February.  We endeavour to match students with their choices for this day, but this may not be possible in all cases.

In addition to these events, should students need further advice and guidance, they can also speak with their form tutors, Miss Bullard or the school’s independent careers advisory service.

The options process is complex, and to ensure that we meet the needs of as many students as possible, it is important that all deadlines are met. The key dates are summarized again below:

Tuesday 26 February                          Year 8 Options Evening

Thursday 28 February                        Deadline for handing in Taster Day Forms

Tuesday 26 March                              Taster Day

Wednesday 27 March                         Deadline for handing in Options Forms
