Welcome to Construction

"It is not the beauty of a building you should look at; its the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time."

David Allan Coe

Level 2 BTEC Award in Construction and the Built Environment – this modern vocational course enables students to develop the skills to allow them to enter the construction sector with a solid balance of academic knowledge and practical building site skills.

The Level 2 BTEC in CBE consists of units 1, 2, 3 and 7:

Unit 1: Construction Technology - This unit will look at techniques for building large structures and the various type of these, such shell and framed structures which would be developed either as timber framed or steel structures.

Unit 2: Construction Design - This unit allows the student to develop building designs for potential customers by analysing what is required form a client specification and brief. Students are able to use this to understand different types of drawings and then create concept drawings for the given brief.

Unit 3: Maths and Scientific Principles - This unit focuses on students' ability to use maths as a tool to be able to plan costing and dimensions for given projects. Students also develop these maths based concepts to be able to apply them to scientific principles such as Stress and Strain or Thermal Expansion.

Unit 7:  Exploring Brickwork and Blockwork Techniques – This practical unit allows students to understand the use of various tools and materials involved in Brickwork and Blockwork projects. Students also then have an opportunity to develop skills in a real construction environment.

All units are presented with links to industry. The main purpose of this course is that students can clearly link their classroom learning to real life engineering trades, as well as developing skills which would be required for academic routes.
