Curriculum

Homework

At The Long Eaton School, a rigorous homework regime is fostered for the following reasons:

  • The completion of regular tasks at home encourages the development of positive learning routines, developing the skills, confidence and motivation needed to study effectively on their own.
  • Setting time aside for study involves a personal commitment to school and academic endeavour.
  • Homework extends the time available for the curriculum and allows additional reading. It assists in meeting the needs of the coursework requirements of external exams.
  • The completion and monitoring of homework encourages a partnership between parents and school.
  • Regular completion of homework is seen to be valued.

In order to develop study routines, an increasing scale of homework per evening will be set as follows:-

  • Year 7 – 1 hour
  • Years 8 & 9 – 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Years 10 & 11 – 2 hours
  • Years 12/13 – the amount of homework done by students outside lessons will depend on their individual programmes, but should be at least 3 hours per night, in addition to study time provided within the curriculum time.

Each subject area will set homework on a regular basis. Homework takes a variety of forms and may demand reading and research rather than  a written assignment.

Homework Clubs and Clinics operate to help students cope with the increasing demands of homework and the School Library is available for private study after school and during lunch on a rota basis.
