Sixth Form

Welcome to The Long Eaton School Sixth Form!

Our 16+ community is a vibrant, dynamic and happy place that welcomes Long Eaton School students and students from other schools to undertake their 16+ studies. It is a place where students feel safe and aspire to great things. We are an integral part of the school, and we pride ourselves on being inclusive and providing the pastoral care and support for all students, that give them a social and academic environment where they can really enjoy their time in the sixth form.

  • Did you know, that in a survey of parents, 97% told us that their child feels safe in the sixth form and 94% told us that their child is happy?

We offer students a wide range of academic and vocational Level 3 courses that prepare them for the demands of further education, and we also provide support for students who must complete their L2 Maths and or English. Small class sizes are very common (between 5-15 students per class), and we have strong educational outcomes. Each year some 75% of our students leave us to complete university studies, with almost 1 in 5 joining Russell Group universities including Oxford University. We also have a track record of students leaving us to commence degree apprenticeships with well-known names such as JCB, Rolls Royce and Balfour Beatty. This is because our curriculum and careers support reflects local industry employment patterns.

  • Did you know, that in 2023, 88% of our leavers who are from disadvantaged backgrounds went on to study at university or begin degree apprenticeships?

Our Careers programme is extensive and meets all of the Gatsby Benchmarks. Students enjoy and participate in a vast range of experiences, to ensure that we are meeting their individual needs. Students have access to independent careers advice, meet employers face to face, complete mock interviews, meet and listen to Alumni and they also have the school’s full support and guidance in making applications to their chosen pathways, to name but a few.

  • Did you know, that between Sept ’23 and Jan ’24, we have already had 10 Alumni visit the school to speak to students?

Behind our academic work, we deliver a diverse enrichment and pastoral program that is centred on student wellbeing and preparation for life after the sixth form in the adult world. It follows on from the pastoral programme in place in the lower school and meets the guidance stipulated by the PSHE Association strands: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the wider world. Lessons are delivered by a team of dedicated 16+ tutors, and at our core are the VESPA principles.

  • Did you know, that in July every year, our Year 12 students enjoy a week long experience of wellbeing, and careers activities on top of the regular support and activities? We call it EPIC week.

We deliver an extensive programme of extracurricular activities for our students. Social events, charitable activities with strong links to organisations such as Anthony Nolan and Rotary, as well as opportunities with the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, National Citizenship Service, and the British Exploring Society mean our students are exposed to a host of opportunities. Many volunteer as leaders in school to achieve our Student Leadership Award – school productions, literacy reading, supporting school clubs and or whilst making the most of varied subject based educational trips including to CERN in Switzerland, the Paris Arts trip, and Geography’s trip to the Jurassic Coast. Working with local industry, our students can access the Engineering Development Trust Industrial Cadets Scheme and we also work with Trent College to access particular guest speakers. Our students have FREE and supervised access to the school Cardio and Weight Fitness Suite.

  • Did you know, that since we started our relationship with the Anthony Nolan stem cell register, 4 students have been found to be potential lifesaving matches?

Our sixth form is a busy place, and we hope you will see this through our website, as well as by following the link below to our prospectus. You will also see that we keep in regular contact with parents through our weekly Bush Telegraph newsletter. This publication can be found here on the website under the heading of communications. This is critical to our success, as we work with parents to support the preparation of our young people for their future.
