The Long Eaton School PE curriculum enables all students to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. Students will develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When students perform, they are asked to think about what they are doing, analyse the situation and make decisions. They also have the opportunity to reflect on their own and others’ performances and find ways to improve.
The essential skills and processes in PE that students need to learn to make progress; developing skills in physical activity; making and applying decisions; developing physical and mental capacity; evaluating and improving and making informed choices about healthy active lifestyles.
Key Stage 5
‘A’ Level PE (OCR) students receive 9 hours of lessons a fortnight at AS and 10 hours a fortnight for A2. The AS course covers Anatomy and Physiology, Acquiring Movement Skills and Socio-Cultural, ‘Performance’ in 2 different sports or performance in one and demonstrating the ability to either officiate or coach/lead in another sport. The final skill of Evaluating and Planning for Improvement of Performance is where students observe and critically evaluate a live performance by another student in one of their own assessed performance activities. A2 students cover Historical, Psychology, Physiology and Biomechanics, ‘Performance’ in 1 activity and Evaluation, appreciation and the improvement of performance in response to a live performance.
The Princes Trust course is delivered to Year 12s in a one year course, 5 hours per fortnight. Students study 3 units, Teamwork, Career Planning and Presentation and is 100% coursework with no examination . All these units build toward a certificate. Career planning includes, writing a CV, personal statement and taking part in a mock interview. The presentation unit helps with confidence building and public speaking skills.
The OCR Cambridge Technical Certificate is delivered to Year 12s in one year and is equivalent to 1 GCSE Grade C or above and assessed through assignments with no formal examination . Units taught are Practical Sport incorporating team and individual activities in practical and theory lessons. Physiology and anatomy cover the bones, muscles and nerves in the body. Fitness testing and training will allow students to develop and implement a training programme to improve fitness.
The Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership gives people aged 16 upwards the skills needed to plan and deliver safe sporting and recreational activities. The Award develops vital leadership skills such as communication, organisation and motivation, whilst installing the confidence and desire in people to make a difference within their own communities. The qualification is practical in nature, with an emphasis on learning through doing and applying knowledge, rather than through theory.
