Welcome to the Observatory

The Malcolm Parry Observatory at The Long Eaton School hosts a variety of events and outreach throughout the year including:

  • Stargazing Live – Our annual showcase event with outside speakers and exhibitor plus lots of hands on activities and observing (weather permitting)

  • ‘Young Stargazer’ evening visits – suitable for most age groups. These sessions compliment most ‘Stargazing’ badges offered by groups such as Scouts and Brownies.

  • Daytime School Visits – we can accommodate visits during normal school hours for school visits. These are best in the summer term as the weather is more likely to be favourable for Solar Observing.

  • Family Astronomy Night – Once a month, during term time, we host an open dome aimed at younger audiences which includes a small talk and a hands on activity. Most suitable for ages 10+.

  • Community Open Dome - Once a month, during term time, we host an open dome for adult audiences which includes a talk on an astronomical topic followed by an observing session (weather permitting). Details of the speaker are updated on the blog.

  • Adult Learning – The Long Eaton School offers a range of Astronomy adult learning courses led by Royal Astronomical Society Fellow Mr M. Perkins. These are run on a Wednesday evening. Details of the courses available can be found on the Information Leaflet and the blog.

  • Bookable Time – External groups can book to visit the observatory for a workshop or talk. These will include observing session if weather permits. We can cater for all levels and ages.
